Search engine optimized (SEO) spam is very much like email spam and even the junk mail that is crammed into your mail box and delivered by the United States Postal Service. In this case, though, the medium is a website you navigate to through a search engine web page in hopes that it provides the content valuable content you seek. When a web designer or developer slams a extraordinary list of applicable keywords into a web page simply for the sake of attracting unique website visitors, that website developer or designer is spamming the search engines, as the search engines generally see this page as a relevant website page to a website visitor's search engine query.
What's wrong with search engine optimized spamming? Well, it depends. Website visitors may merely think of it as a pain in the ass, having to land upon a sub-standard web page that likely lacks any real content of value, ultimately resulting in a high bounce rate. A website or web page that receives a high bounce rate is a site with a page or pages that do not lead receives web visitors who do not navigate to additional pages within that site, resulting in additional site page views and instead resulting in the web visitor in navigating elsewhere on the World Wide Web (WWW). Creating such a page is quick, easy, cheap and while it does lead to a high bounce rate, it is better than a blank page, unless of course the website becomes black balled by the search engines for spamming. Yes. That's right. A website can be black listed for such practices, particularly if the site has little to no value and especially if it is reported to search engines such as Yahoo and Google for spamming practices. While being a SEO Spam Rat is generally not a common practice of the average website visitor, it can be for paritcularly dismal sites. More than likely, though, it will be the website's business competitor that'll emerge as the SEO Spam Rat. In any case, SEO spamming is frowned upon by the more astute or even the more jealous of the search engine optimizers and search engine marketing (SEM) consultants. Regardless of whether these web professionals frown upon such practices, reality makes the high stakes game of SEO makes SEO spamming somewhat of a relative term. Yes. It's a relative term. Sure, the two are indeed distinguishable and rank high on message board debates. Take a look at any low-ball budget site developed by some part-timer with a knack for harnessing the powers of the Google Keyword Phrase Search Engine Tool. Usually, the site usually looks and reads like crap. This is hardly comparable to a professionally developed website with a real world professional SEO tactician. It's in the gray area where the relativity comes to play. Since I am looking to track down more local business versus targeting the vast automotive and off-road industry, I have been studying the various sites here in the High Desert of Southern California, which includes Phelan, Oak Hills, Hesperia, Victorville, Adelanto and Apple Valley. This area is in the dark ages of technological sophistication that almost dates back to Dale Evans. Not only does it show on local search engine web results but also in its pursuit for improvement. This shows in many of its current gaggle of web developers and designers as well as the money they are accustomed to and willing to pay, which reminds me why I turned a blind eye on the High Desert in the past. The market is simply a tough sell but also a market that is wide open for the entrepreneur with ambition, a plan and some financial resources to make it happen. Anyhow, let's get back to the subject so we can finalize the discussion and I can get on with producing an 8,000 visitor retail community newsletter. The Holiday Season of 2007 and the Almighty's Christmas is but a few months away, and now's the time to get moving on making it a good one. Now, the reason I say SEO spam is a relative term is merely because it is the duty of an SEO Copy Writer to take hold of those keywords and keyword phrases and integrate the SEO spam into cohesive, enticing and easily read web page. Now, let's say I'm looking to track down retail off-road, recreational vehicle (RV) and automotive customers here in the high desert. Okay. So I got a bit carried away. It's habit. Now, let's slide a few of these into keyword phrases. I may be a bit facetious here. So, bare with me in the hopes that I illustrate a worthy point and some form of instruction as to the practical process. - Hesperia RV Dealers
- Victorville Ford Dealer
- High Desert Motorcycle Repair Shop
- SCORE Off-Road Trophy Truck Builder
- Victorville RV Repair
- Southern California Monaco Dealer
- Southern California Manaco Dealer (OOPS!!!! IT'S MISSPELLED!!!!)
Okay. Now let's eloquently place some of these phrases into sentences that are somewhat compelling. Because it's late and I am not about to take the time to proofread the exaggeration below, please consider this nothing more than an exaggerative illustration. As the largest and most renowned new and used RV dealer and authorized service center in Southern California's High Desert, Super Duper RV is touted by consumers and by such organizations as the RVIA, Good Sam's Club and virtually every weekend warrior this side of the Sand Dunes of Glamis as the premier five-star dealership in the Western United States. A giant RV super center with a strategic Interstate 15 location, making for easy access for snowbirds and off-road enthusiasts alike, Super Duper RV is dedicated to providing superior service and an affordable RV to each of its loyal family of customers. From Montclair to Fontana and beyond, when you're passing through the High Desert on vacation or to watch an off-road race with the dirt bikes and SCORE Trophy Trucks and Jeeps in tow, drop by and say high. And we don't mind if you only drop to let loose of your dump take at our ultra-clean dump station that stands in the shadows of our 45 RV service bays and RV parts and accessory super store. Well, there you go. That's a mere snapshot of the criminality that takes place amid the underworld of SEO spammers. Like I said it's late. But let's at least take some time to look at a few notable elements. First off all, we're targeting a few key RV markets, off-road enthusiasts, snowbirds and Good Sam Members. Each are prevalent in this area and markets that RV dealerships in this area are not yet savvy enough to capitalize upon. Essentially, we're not only building a brand identity here through the use of keywords, but we're also building a long-term revenue stream that serves as free advertising from the search engines. Now, if you know the area depicted, you may have picked up on another tactic. We made reference to an "affordable RV," "range RV" as well as a "giant RV." It just so happens that each phrases turns out to be competitors. Affordable RV is local here in Hesperia and also has a location in Fontana as well, which is another market that is worth targeting and is therefore referenced in the above copy writing. Range RV is a local dealership here in this area as well and happens to be located near Affordable RV along the I-15. Though not local, Giant RV is a dealership with a slew of locations and just so happens to heavily target the off-road industry and just so happens to have a prominent location in Montclair. Of course, Montclair is also referenced. Want more??? Well, Weekend Warrior trailers and fifth wheel toy haulers are carried exclusively by Giant RV. The toy haulers possess a cult following in the off-road industry and are highly sought after in the Glamis and off-road communities. Each of these notable keywords have referenced above. Anyhow, that's SEO spamming 101. Market competition is tough in virtually any industry. You've got to be tougher and enlist a web development professional who is talented in an array of skills. Not only must one be a proficient web designer (graphics geek) and web developer (code slinger), but one must have a comprehensive attack plan with copy writing skills that are compelling to your target market. A copy writer with experience in a client's list of target markets is extremely valuable. Now, to close it up, let's look at this a few SEO practices that could send your business website to the abyss of search engine results by being black listed and result in a high bounce rate from potential customers. - Suspicious URL redirects
- URL and website cloaking
- Hidden text
- Root index pages that are link farms just for search engines with a cookie cutter approach
- Hidden text links
- Automated Google queries
- Goofy affiliate programs
- Web pages populated with an abundance of irrelevant keywords and keyword phrases
- Duplicate content throughout multiple pages, domains and sub-domains
The bottom line of it all is to develop a website that is attractive to your target markets by providing high value content that inspires inbound links from industry-related websites.
